At the last meeting of the CPS on May 11th, the African Union Peace and Security Council reiterated its demand that the leaders of the Chadian transition not participate in future elections and published its conclusions on Friday.

During their meeting, the members of the Peace and Security Council examined the report of the African Union’s Panel of the Wise, which, led by former Burundian President Donatien Ndayizeye, visited Ndjamena in mid-March.

The CPS believes that it is necessary to continue to “accompany” Chad. He, therefore, said to “take note” of the extension of the transition for 24 months to “support” the implementation of the recommendations of the inclusive and sovereign national dialogue (DNIS), while asking for “a clear roadmap, accompanied by a precise timetable”, and an “inclusive political transition, in particular about the elaboration of a new Constitution and the choice of the form of the State”.

In addition, the council “reiterates” its position expressed in May 2021: “The members of the transitional authorities must not take part in the planned elections”.

The government has not yet officially reacted, but one of its executives points to a “contradiction”. “We cannot rely on dialogue and add points that were not in its recommendations,” he believes. “The council goes beyond the scope of its action by entering into questions of sovereignty”, adds this highly placed source.
