Hundreds of residents of the western Burkina Faso town of Nouna protested on Thursday in front of the gendarmerie detachment to demand more security after six residents were killed on Tuesday.

One of the demonstrators confirmed to the press on the spot the protest of the inhabitants in this city, plagued by jihadist violence, in the Boucle du Mouhoun region. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand security in and around the town.

The organizers of the demonstration denounced the dangerous traffic on the various roads around Nouna due to the activity of jihadist groups, which operate controls in the region. The demonstrators demanded that these roads be secured to facilitate the movement of the inhabitants.

On Tuesday, six people were found dead on the Nouna-Djibasso road after being abducted.

The deputy chief of the gendarmerie brigade received the protesters’ complaints and assured them that the necessary steps would be taken and that their concerns would be addressed as soon as possible.

On Sunday, at least 13 people were killed by unidentified gunmen in Haourèma-Karekuy, 10 km north of Nouna.

Burkina Faso has been plagued since 2015 by a spiral of jihadist violence that began in Mali and Niger a few years ago and has spread beyond their borders.
