In Chad, the prosecutor’s office in Gore announced on Thursday that an armed attack in southern Chad left 17 people dead and that an investigation has been opened in this regard.

In a statement, the prosecutor of the Republic of Chad, Nerambaye Ndoubamian said that the massacre was perpetrated Monday when “unidentified armed individuals” attacked the village of Don, located in the province of Logone-Oriental, bordering the Central African Republic.

Nerambaye Ndoubamian added that the assailants were armed with firearms and knives and committed several crimes: the kidnapping of cattle, arson, and murder of a dozen villagers.

These villagers are mainly from the Kabba community, an ethnic group that lives in Chad and the neighboring Central African Republic and makes its living from agriculture.

Among the 17 dead, 11 people were “formally identified” in the village of Don, three others 3km from the village. Some of the wounded, including an infant, died from severe injuries and others were transferred to health centers for treatment, the same source added.

An investigation was opened and a call for witnesses was issued by the prosecutor’s office to identify the perpetrators accused of criminal conspiracy, arson, theft, and murder.

On this subject, the head of this community in N’Djamena described the violence as “cowardly, barbaric, and despicable acts”, accusing the administrative and military authorities of impotence and complicity in these armed conflicts.

Inter-community conflicts between nomadic Muslim herders and farmers, who are mainly Christians or animists, are very frequent in this region.
