In the south of Chad, near the Central African border, the death in still unclear circumstances, on May 5th, 2023, of an important breeder from the canton of Goré, led to a spiral of violence which has so far caused thirty deaths and dozens injured, according to the administration and witnesses.

In Chad, a new outbreak of violence between herders and farmers, in the province of Logone Oriental, in the south of the country. It all started this time, with the assassination on May 5th, 2023, in circumstances not yet clarified, of a major breeder in the canton of Goré, about thirty kilometers from the border with the Central African Republic.

Since then, the breeders have embarked on revenge operations that have spread to a good part of this region, causing so far around thirty deaths and dozens of injuries, according to the administration and witnesses.

It was Friday morning when an Arab breeder named Bei was killed in troubled circumstances, even though the administration and farmers say he was in the neighboring Central African Republic at the time. It is the spark that ignites the powder.

Breeders armed with guns and swords rushed quickly, some on motorbikes, some on horseback, and the next day launched reprisal operations in the surrounding villages, where they killed six people in Mballakoutou and Begoné.

They won’t stop there. Since then, these assailants have set two to three villages in the region on fire and blood every day, with sometimes heavy tolls, as in the village of Don where they killed 15 people three days ago, including the chief of the village, not to mention the looted cattle or the burnt houses.
