Germany is planning to participate in a three-year European Union military training mission in Niger. The EU plans to deploy between 50 and 100 European soldiers as part of the mission to help Niger strengthen its logistics and military infrastructure.

The European Parliament has approved Germany’s decision to send 60 soldiers to participate in the mission.

This decision reaffirms Germany’s support for the Sahel and Niger as a stable anchor in the Sahel. Germany’s support was expressed despite the withdrawal of the UN stabilization mission in Mali, MINUSMA.

Last November, Germany joined other European countries that have withdrawn their soldiers from Mali and decided to withdraw them by May 2024, recalling that 1100 soldiers are still based in Mali and mainly in Gao.
