Six months after the violent repression of the October 20th protests, the Chadian League for Human Rights and the World Organization Against Torture published their report on the events on Wednesday. Several opposition parties then called for demonstrations, despite the ban on the authorities, against the extension of the transition and the continued leadership of Mahamat Idriss Deby. NGOs draw up a death toll of 218, higher than that of the National Human Rights Commission, which already counted 128 victims, and that of the government, which counted only 73.

At least 218 dead is the toll drawn up by the Chadian League for Human Rights and the World Organization Against Torture. Assessment of what Chadians call “Black Thursday”, the repression of the demonstrations of October 20th, 2022, and the days that followed.

“We extract the body at night to throw it either in the river or mass graves, explains Me Adoum Mahamat Boukar, president of the LTDH. So the extent of these massacres, no one can measure it accurate. When you look, most victims have bullets in the forehead, head, chest, or back. »

Aziz Mahamat Saleh, the Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, has asserted that the report produced by a particular organization is biased and reflective of a partisan perspective. He expressed his disappointment that the report failed to present a balanced view and instead placed the sole responsibility on one side. According to him, the current situation involves urban guerrillas who have organized themselves, and the protests are not a straightforward, well-defined manifestation from point A to point B. He further remarked that the report is incriminating, since those who instigated the insurrection are the ones responsible for its creation.
