24 people have been killed and thousands displaced by clashes between Arab and non-Arab tribes in Darfur, in western Sudan.

A member of the local council of a town in West Darfur state said that since Saturday, 24 people have died from Arab and Massalit tribes.

As a result of the clashes, local authorities declared a night-time curfew and a month-long state of emergency throughout the state.

Although calm has been restored, the UN recorded 50 houses in Foro Baranga, displacing 20,000 people.

Darfur is often plagued by tribal violence, triggered by territorial disputes. These conflicts have exploded, according to experts, due to the security vacuum created by the 2021 coup.

According to the UN, the civil war that started in 2003 left 300,000 people dead and nearly 2.5 million displaced.

The war was triggered between the regime of Omar al-Bashir, which is due to fall in 2019, and ethnic minorities.
