President Muhammadu Buhari, who will leave office in May, condemned on Saturday the attack on a school in Banue province, assuring that efforts have been made to stop the “extreme violence”.

In a presidential statement, Buhari condemned the use of terrorism as a tool in inter-communal conflicts, while calling for the assailants to be identified and brought to justice.

The attack on the school, which housed displaced families in Benue province, left 37 people dead, according to Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.

Local authorities blame nomadic Fulani herders for the massacre, as they have long clashed with farmers in Benue province over access to land and resources.

Benue province continues to experience clashes between nomadic herders and farmers, who prevent herders from grazing their cattle on their land.

Earlier this week, another attack on a village in the same province left 50 people dead.
