John Steenhuisen was re-elected on Sunday in Midrand as the leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s main opposition party.

He won against former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse and is expected to lead the opposition party in the next general election in 2024.

The DA wants to bring the ruling African National Congress (ANC) below 50% of the vote.

Steenhuisen promised on the sidelines of the party’s congress, which was attended by more than 2000 delegates, the inevitable rise of a DA-led government in 2024 and that the decline of the ANC is evident, and that it is only a matter of time.

He pointed out that recent polls have shown growing support for his party among South Africans.

Steenhuisen has been the DA leader since the resignation of his predecessor Mmusi Maimane in 2020.
