As a part of its efforts to diversify its electricity sources and speed up its energy transition, a crucial component of its response to climate change, Uganda announced on Thursday that it aims to begin generating at least 1000 megawatts (MW) from nuclear power by 2031.

Uganda has a contract with China that calls for the Chinese National Nuclear Company (CNNC) to assist the country in developing its nuclear energy capacity for peaceful uses.

The Ugandan Energy and Minerals Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, affirmed on a statement that “the first nuclear project, the Buyende Nuclear Power Station, will be situated at Buyende, around 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of Kampala, the country’s capital”.

“Preparation to examine the site of the Buyende Nuclear Power Plant is proceeding to prepare the way for the first nuclear power project planned to generate 2,000 MW, with the first 1000 MW to be connected to the national grid by 2031,” she stated.
