Chinese medical teams have contributed to the health of African people through hundreds of assistance missions to African countries since 1960.

Thousands of Africans have benefited from the efficient medical services and medical skills of these Chinese teams, known by the local population as “Chinese doctors”.

Similarly, these teams have contributed to the improvement of medical and health services in African countries. Indeed, clinics and health centers have been built in isolated areas and a large number of African medical staff have been trained.

The staff members have developed deep ties with the local population through their humanitarian spirit.

History is full of examples of China’s medical commitment to African countries. In 1963, China sent its first medical team to Algeria, led by a retired doctor who was an obstetrician and gynecologist at Xiangya Hospital of Zhongnan University, Zhang Youming.

This team provided medical assistance to Africa in the most difficult areas of Algeria for two and a half years, successfully performing thousands of operations and helping many African children to be born safely.

These acts of solidarity reflect the long-standing friendship between China and Africa.
