Yvonne Aki Sawyerr, from the APC, the main opposition party in Sierra Leone has been mayor of Freetown since her election in 2018. This has not been welcomed by the government.

She is known for her initiative to appoint a heat manager to combat the effects of extreme temperatures.

The reform of the tax system was among the projects of Yvonne Aki Sawyerr, despite the resistance of the government which “froze this system a few days after its deployment”. This reform, according to her, has increased the number of taxpayers and increased the taxes in force.

This reform must be implemented, according to her, because taxes are essential for the proper functioning of public services in the city.

Yvonne Aki Sawyerr plans to stand for re-election in June. There are only six months left in her term. According to local media, other items on her agenda are delayed due to legal proceedings.

It should be noted that Yvonne Aki Sawyerr has been investigated for corruption. In turn, she accuses the government of antagonizing her because of her political affiliation with the opposition.
