In the Central African Republic, the National Elections Authority (ANE) wants to be reassuring, according to its president, security issues and the prospect of a constitutional referendum do not prevent the preparation of local elections scheduled for July 16. Postponed several times, these municipal and regional elections have been expected since 1988.

The establishment of local branches of the National Elections Authority in the 20 prefectures of the country and electoral mapping have been completed. The place now to the revision of the lists of electors.

The president of the ANE, Mathias Morouba, ensures that the ballot can be held in the 176 municipalities of the country, and this, despite the multiplication of security incidents, “Today, we are revising the integrated security plan elections. But everything is being done to reduce possible hostilities and also to prevent them. The population is asking for participation in these elections.

“We believe in this and believe that this is possible whatever the situation,” added Mathias Morouba.

While the prospect of a referendum on a new Constitution divides strongly, the ANE ensures that it has not been seized and that it cannot link this consultation to the local elections: “The law does not authorize us to link the elections, this is not possible. The national electoral authority has not been officially contacted to organize any referendum. It was not even the subject of discussions at the level of the ANE, nor by the competent authorities, to reflect on the referendum. »
