The vice president died after a short illness, “in India where he was undergoing medical treatment,” Gambian President Adama Barrow said on Twitter, without giving further details.

President Adama Barrow had chosen him as vice-president in 2022, after being re-elected in December 2021 for a second term.

He previously served as Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology from 2017 to 2022.

Last June, Badara Alieu Joof expressed his displeasure with the conduct of public affairs, saying Gambians had high expectations and that “business as usual” would not lead to a decisive change.
