The Gambian government spokesperson has said in a statement that two civilians and a police officer in connection with a foiled coup attempt on December 21 have been arrested.

The statement said they were Mustapha Jabbi and Saikuba Jabbi, and police inspector Fakebba Jawara, accused of conspiracy to commit a crime and concealment of treason.

It should be noted that in the framework of this case, 7 soldiers have already been arrested and the commission of enquiry, in this case, is expected to deliver its report at the end of the month.

On the other hand, a leader of the main opposition party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), Momodou Sabally, was arrested for his appearance in a video in which he suggests the overthrow of President Adama Barrow, which was released last week.

The Gambian government had claimed that the aim behind the foiled coup was to “arrest senior government officials and use them as hostages to prevent any foreign intervention”.
