After rumours that soldiers training in Eritrea had been sent to the war-torn Ethiopian region of Tigray, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud told yesterday, during a forum organised by the Somali diaspora during his visit to the United States that the return of these soldiers to the country is scheduled for the coming days.

President Mohamoud had already promised to bring the soldiers home during his election campaign in the spring, after his visit to the training camps in Eritrea last July, following protests from the families of soldiers who wanted news of their loved ones during the presidency of Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, known as “Farmajo”.

These concerns arose after the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Eritrea referred last year to “reports that Somali soldiers have been moved from military training camps in Eritrea to the front line in Tigray, supporting the Ethiopian federal forces.
