The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and the UN Security Council, condemned the incident that took place in the city of Timbuktu, in northern Mali, on Friday, in which the policy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali was killed.

The UN statement stated that two Nigerian peacekeepers, one of them a woman, were killed during the attack, while four others were wounded.

Guterres stressed that attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law while expressing his solidarity with Mali.

The UN Secretary-General calls on the Malian authorities to identify the perpetrators of these heinous attacks and bring them swiftly to justice.
