A year before the elections, a hundred Liberians held yesterday a peaceful demonstration in front of the Samuel Kanyon Doe stadium in the suburbs of the capital against the country’s president, George Weah, because of deteriorating living conditions, inflation, shortage of essential goods and services, and poverty. An AFP correspondent reported this.

The slogans and banners carried the message “We are tired of suffering”, as the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) coalition called the rally.

These messages are addressed to the president who has been out of the country since 31 October and is expected to return officially on Sunday.

The CPP coalition is emerging as one of the president’s primary opponents, accusing him of incompetence and indifference to the plight of Liberians. In addition, the government is struggling with the organisation of elections.

It should be noted that Mr Weah was among the presidents of six African countries where elections are scheduled for 2023.
