UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during a press conference on Thursday, while his participation in the annual conference of the African Union and the United Nations in Addis Ababa, that the world depended on Africa, but the continent “could not depend on the world, and that must change.”

Guterres added that he sees the growing number of young Africans as “borderless energy, new ways of thinking, and solutions that can benefit the world.”

Guterres affirmed that the development and economic recovery in African countries are hostages to “the morally bankrupt global financial system,” especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The UN Secretary-General said that the food insecurity of millions on the African continent, including 36 million people suffering from the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in decades, in addition to the recent floods that flooded Nigeria, Chad and South Sudan, killing hundreds and displacing millions, is a “reminder of our failure to address the climate crisis.”
