The Iranian national team players refused to chant the national anthem, in solidarity with the Iranian people, during the match that brought them together with the England national team, in the first group matches of the World Cup.

Iran has been witnessing widespread protests for more than two months, since the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini, after she was arrested by the morality police, for not respecting the dress code imposed by the authorities.

The voices of Iranian fans rose inside the Khalifa International Stadium, while tears appeared on the faces of a number of them while chanting the Iranian national anthem.

Ali Reza Jahbakhsh, captain of the Iranian national team, had previously told the media that the players had discussed the issue, and that the decision would be taken collectively.
