The Moroccan authorities detained 275 sub-Saharan immigrants in different raids in Tetouan to be transferred to the interior of the country to avoid their approach to the border with the occupied city of Ceuta.

This operation by the Moroccan authorities aims to prevent the emigrants from congregating in the woods near the border, According to Efe.

The raids come four months after the deadliest attempted border crossing in Melilla city when between 1,700 and 2,000 immigrants tried to cross the city, Which caused the killing of 24 people.

After the Melilla tragedy, local NGOs including the Moroccan Association for Human Rights condemned the forced transfers of migrants to interior cities like Beni Mellal or Marrakech.

However, Morocco defends that these transfers are aimed to combat clandestine emigration networks in accordance with the law that allows the authorities to decide the place where an emigrant in an irregular situation can reside.
