Colombian Senate expressed its rejection of the President’s decision to recognize polisario front

The Colombian Senate expressed its “categorical rejection” and “absolute disagreement” with the decision of leftist President Gustavo Petro about restoring diplomatic relations with the Polisario front.

Through a statement signed by 62 senators, out of 108 members of the Parliament lower house, including those belonging to the ruling coalition, the overwhelming majority supported the Moroccan sovereignty recognizing over its Sahara which is the former government of Iván Duque’s decision.

Moreover, the senators described Morocco in the joint statement as a long-standing ally and friend, and they express their rejection and disagreement with the Ministry of Foreign Relations’s position that was taken on August 10, 2022.
The signators also warned that the decision taken by the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs last August, which infringes on one of the basic principles of Colombian diplomacy, may cause bad consequences, and destroyed the relations be the two countries that were always united.
