The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, held a long discussion with the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Sahara conflict, Staffan de Mistura.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said In a brief statement, that the discussions were held in the capital, Moscow, where “the status and prospects of the settlement process for Western Sahara were discussed, and di Mistura shared his assessment of all results of his visit to Algeria and Morocco and provided a conclusion of the current situation in this region.”

The statement added that the Russian side emphased, “the importance of achieving a just, long-term and mutually acceptable solution to the problem of Moroccan Sahara, based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry concluded that the meeting discussed the role of the United Nations Mission in the Sahara “MINURSO” in achieving stability, and the need for the various parties to the conflict to maintain communication and interaction with the mission.
