Algeria: Presidential Election Candidate Submissions Conclude

Aspiring presidential candidates for the Algeria’s election set for 07/09/2024 have since submitted their applications as well as the signature forms in support of their candidacies on 18/07/2024. In the list of the aspiring candidates, the current president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is also a contender for the second term in presidency for the period of five years.

Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, the Secretary general of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) was the first to present his files to ANIE at the Palaces of nations of west – Algiers. To this Islamist leader the presidential election means a prospect for ‘reform, change and the surmounting of all the constraints that have characterized Algeria in the past.

Later in the morning the First Secretary of the Socialist Forces Front (FFS), one of the opposition parties, Youcef Aouchiche also filed his application. The FFS has stepped down from presidential elections for 25 years, which means a certain change in their political activity.

Continued with the candidacy of incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune who filed his papers in the early evening. He, in a short interview with the press, said that he was grateful to everyone who stood behind his second bid for the presidency.

Saida Neghza, president of an employers’ organization, the last to file her application, one hour to go.

The Independent National Election Authority shall within seven days of submission of the applications either validate the applications. The Constitutional Court is expected to come up with the final list on the July 27th 2024.
