President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani won the latest presidential elections and was officially declared on Thursday by the Constitutional Council. The Constitutional Council immediately validated the election results when the six other candidates did not appeal.

This was going to be a mean feat for a 67-year-old career military officer, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, having been elected for the first time in 2019 and still guaranteeing another term of five years, leading Mauritania after getting 56.12% of the votes.

Three of his competitors, including Hamad Ould Sid Elmotar from the Islamist party Tewassoul, have also reportedly congratulated the reelected president.

To this, though, Biram Dah Abeid, the main rival facing off against Ghazouani, is in second place for the election. He opened discussions of the allegedly fixed election, calling on the dialogue that the authorities were conducting sought to solve the post-election crisis.

Trouble began in several cities after the election commission issued results on Monday. Three people were killed, according to official figures, and two police officers were injured.
