The upcoming presidential election in Mauritania, scheduled for June 29th, has garnered significant attention from the United Nations. Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Office for West Africa, spent five days in the country last week to monitor the electoral process.

During his visit, Simão met with key stakeholders, including President Mohamed Ould El Ghazouani, presidential candidates, and the electoral bodies responsible for organizing the election. Despite acknowledging some issues that need to be addressed before the vote, Simão expressed satisfaction and confidence in the credibility of the upcoming election.

“I am satisfied. I am reassured that the country is ready for credible and peaceful elections. I had the opportunity to meet with the institutions responsible for managing the elections, most of the candidates, and members of civil society as well,” reported Simão.

Simão noted that concerns raised by the candidates are expected, as they seek to ensure that the institutions are prepared to conduct an impartial and neutral process. He emphasized that measures are being taken to resolve these issues during the pre-election phase.

“We are in a region plagued by instability and setbacks in democracy. Successfully conducted elections in Mauritania will have a positive impact on the development of democracy in the region,” Simão added.

The United Nations’ confidence in Mauritania’s electoral process highlights the importance of these elections, not only for the country’s political landscape but also for the broader West African region. As Mauritania prepares for this pivotal moment, the international community remains watchful and hopeful for a democratic and peaceful outcome.
