The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has sounded the alarm on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in South Sudan, with its regional director for Africa, Patrick Youssef, issuing a stark warning that the crisis must not fade into obscurity.

Since the onset of the conflict, over 600,000 individuals have fled from neighboring Sudan, while a staggering 7 million people within the country face food insecurity. Compounding this dire situation is the unfortunate reality that the ICRC, among other aid organizations, is scaling back its operations due to insufficient funding.

Youssef, having recently returned from the region, described witnessing profound suffering in South Sudan. He shared his concerns about the evolving humanitarian crisis, having spent time in Akobo, Malakal, and Diel—areas in the states of Upper Nile and Jonglei characterized by political instability, food insecurity, and a continuous influx of refugees from neighboring Sudan, which has been embroiled in conflict for a year.

Reflecting on his experiences, Youssef emphasized the critical role played by local South Sudanese communities in providing refuge to those displaced by conflict. However, he underscored the immense challenges faced in areas where food security is a daily struggle and sustainable livelihoods are scarce.

The closure of vital ICRC projects, particularly health facilities, weighs heavily on Youssef and his team in Juba. He lamented these decisions, recognizing the urgent need on the ground and acknowledging the worsening humanitarian situation.

In the face of dwindling financial support, Youssef expressed dismay over new taxes imposed by the Juba authorities on humanitarian aid. He warned that such measures would directly impact the assistance provided to vulnerable populations, further exacerbating their plight.

Despite these challenges, Youssef remains hopeful that rationality will prevail. However, he noted with concern that other humanitarian agencies have already significantly reduced their aid efforts.

The urgency of the situation in South Sudan cannot be overstated. The international community and relevant stakeholders must heed the call for increased support and action to alleviate the suffering of millions caught in the grip of this escalating crisis.
