A coalition comprising Malian political parties and civil society organizations has taken the unprecedented step of appealing to the Supreme Court on Monday, seeking the annulment of the junta’s recent prohibition on political engagements.

In a released statement, the coalition expressed its firm resolve to contest the junta’s decree, denouncing it as oppressive and tyrannical. The ruling military authority imposed a blanket suspension on all political entities and associated activities on April 10th.

This action followed a collective call from over 80 political parties and civil society groups on March 31st, urging the swift return to constitutional governance through the expeditious organization of presidential elections.

Mali, situated in West Africa, has been entrenched in military control since a coup d’état unfolded in 2020, followed by a subsequent coup in 2021.

Initially, the transitional government pledged to reinstate civilian administration by March 2024, following the national elections conducted in February of the current year.

However, in a significant deviation from this trajectory, authorities announced in September their decision to indefinitely postpone the scheduled elections.
