In a heart-wrenching incident, a day-old baby boy was discovered abandoned in a polythene bag along Alhaji Masha Road in the Surulere area of Lagos State. The infant’s plight came to light when a conscientious social worker, affiliated with a hospital in Surulere, happened to hear the sound of a crying baby emanating from the bag while on her way to a destination.

Upon closer inspection, the social worker was shocked to find the newborn baby boy wrapped in the polythene bag. Acting swiftly, she rushed the infant to Randle General Hospital for urgent medical attention. Fortunately, the baby responded positively to the medical intervention and is currently undergoing treatment.

Following the rescue, authorities including the Divisional Police Officer and a team from the family support unit promptly visited the scene of the incident to investigate further. Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the occurrence of the incident.

This distressing incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of newborns and the importance of timely intervention and support systems to ensure their safety and well-being. It also underscores the critical role that compassionate individuals like social workers play in safeguarding the lives of the most vulnerable members of society.
