Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has reiterated his concerns regarding the 2024 budget, emphasizing its crucial significance for the well-being of citizens, particularly the less privileged.

In a statement released via X on Tuesday, Obi vowed to persist in highlighting the budget’s shortcomings, pointing out their far-reaching implications for the nation’s progress and the welfare of its people.

“It is evident that certain aspects of the budget do not align with our current circumstances, necessitating a review and appropriate reallocation of funds. Prioritizing the allocation of our limited resources to address pressing societal needs is paramount for the nation’s welfare,” Obi emphasized.

He expressed dismay at the allocation of N15 billion solely for the National Assembly hospital, which significantly surpasses the budgetary allocation to The National Hospital and the combined capital vote of the nation’s six major teaching hospitals.

“This glaring disparity underscores a lack of equitable distribution of resources,” Obi remarked.

Obi also raised concerns about the justification for allocating N15.3 billion for the National Assembly library project and procurement of books, including the e-Library, while neglecting the construction of the National Library, which has been ongoing for the past two decades.

“The meager budgetary allocation to the National Library, juxtaposed with the extravagant allocation to the National Assembly Library, is highly disappointing,” Obi stated.

Furthermore, Obi highlighted the allocation of N10 billion for the construction of car parks and recreational centers for the Senate and House of Representatives, while inadequately funding the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

“In an era where science, technology, and innovation are paramount for national development, such budgetary allocations demonstrate a lack of foresight and understanding of global trends and national priorities,” Obi emphasized.

Obi called for a reassessment of budget priorities, advocating for a thorough review to eliminate frivolous expenditures and ensure that resources are effectively channeled toward improving citizens’ welfare.
