PDCI Unveils Details of Former President Henri Konan Bédié’s Funeral Arrangements

The party of the late Henri Konan Bédié revealed on Thursday, April 11th, the intricate details of organizing his funeral. The funeral rites for the former Ivorian president, who passed away on August 1st last year, are scheduled to commence from May 19th, 2024, until June 1st, as previously announced by the Ivorian presidency on March 11th.

However, the PDCI disclosed the program for a solemn ceremony, encompassing tributes at his former residence, the National Assembly, and the party headquarters.

Several significant events will mark the two-week funeral period. Firstly, a condolence presentation will be held at the late head of state’s residence in Cocody, north of Abidjan. Over three evenings, dignitaries, party members, and close associates will pay their respects to Henri Konan Bédié’s immediate family.

Following this, starting from Thursday, May 23rd, an official homage will be organized to honor the memory of the former head of state. This sequence spans three days and includes the lying in state, homage at the presidency, followed by the National Assembly, culminating in a ceremony at the party headquarters.

Subsequently, the body will be transported to Daoukro, the stronghold of Henri Konan Bédié. In Daoukro, located in the central region of the country, a public tribute will commence from May 27th. For four days, each section of the PDCI will march through its lands, paying homage to the late Baoulé leader. This pilgrimage holds significance as it allows party members to honor their departed leader.

Lastly, final official ceremonies will precede Bédié’s burial in his village of Pepressou on June 1st.

Several key figures are involved in organizing these funeral arrangements, including Henri Konan Bédié’s family, his political party, and the presidency. On March 11th, during a meeting with Tidjane Thiam, Alassane Ouattara pledged his support in facilitating the organization of these funeral rites, demonstrating a collaborative effort in honoring the late leader’s legacy.
