In an unusual occurrence, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake rattled the vicinity of New York City on Friday morning, causing tremors that reverberated along the East Coast and catching residents off guard in an area unaccustomed to significant seismic activity.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicenter was located in Tewksbury, central New Jersey, approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of New York City. The seismic event occurred shortly after 10:20 a.m. ET (1420 GMT) at a depth of 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles).

Despite the intensity of the earthquake, no major damage was reported. However, New York Governor Kathy Hochul cautioned about the potential for aftershocks during a press briefing, indicating that engineering teams are conducting assessments of infrastructure, including roads and bridges.

“This marks one of the most significant earthquakes to affect the East Coast in the last century,” Governor Hochul remarked, underlining the rarity of such seismic events in the region.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams echoed similar sentiments, assuring the public that no injuries had been reported but advising residents to seek shelter under sturdy furniture, doorways, or interior walls if they experience aftershocks.

“New Yorkers should proceed with their daily routines,” Mayor Adams urged, emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant amidst the aftermath of the earthquake.

Reports of rumbling and shaking were widespread, with residents from Baltimore to Boston describing their experiences and some venturing outdoors in an attempt to discern the source of the seismic activity.

Charita Walcott, a 38-year-old Bronx resident, likened the sensation of the quake to a “violent rumble” lasting approximately 30 seconds, evoking imagery akin to being amidst a drum circle.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of this rare seismic event, authorities and residents alike remain vigilant, underscoring the imperative of preparedness and resilience in the face of unexpected natural phenomena.
