The South African cabinet has granted its endorsement for the selection of Duncan Pieterse as the incoming director-general of the National Treasury. Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, conveyed this announcement on Thursday.

After serving as the head of economic policy, Duncan Pieterse took on the responsibility of leading asset and liability management at the National Treasury in his most recent role.

Duncan Pieterse played a pivotal role in the implementation of a government strategy, unveiled in February, which aims to assume over 50% of the debt belonging to Eskom, the financially challenged state power corporation, within the next three years.

Ismail Momoniat, a seasoned figure within the National Treasury, assumed the role of acting director-general in June 2022. This transition occurred after Dondo Mogajane departed from the position due to the conclusion of his contract.
