In 2022, Morocco’s imports carried out under Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) experienced a substantial rise of 20.9% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 207.8 billion Moroccan dirhams (MMDH), as per the annual report published by the Office of Foreign Exchange concerning Morocco’s international trade.

These imports were predominantly executed within the framework of the agreement with the European Union (EU), constituting 66.6% of the overall import volume. This statistic was highlighted by the Office in a report compliant with the United Nations Manual on Statistics of International Trade in Services (IMTS 2010).

Imports under the EU agreement saw an increase of 15.1%, driven by heightened imports from Spain (+15.1%), France (+10.4%), Italy (+16.7%), and Germany (+13.4%), according to data provided by the same source.

Regarding the agreement with the United States, it secured the second position, surpassing the agreement with Turkey, accounting for 15.2% of all imports conducted under FTAs. Imports benefiting from this agreement reached 31.5 MMDH in 2022, marking a notable surge of 60.8% compared to the preceding year.

Conversely, imports under the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) saw stabilization following a 4.1% decrease in 2021. The decline in imports from Norway (-166 million dirhams – MDH) and Iceland (-2 MDH) was offset by an increase from Switzerland (+172 MDH) and Liechtenstein (+2 MDH).

Additionally, imports under the Turkey agreement increased by 20.5%, reaching 27.1 MMDH in 2022. Besides monitoring the economic landscape, this report caters to the information needs expressed by public authorities, international organizations, and national and foreign economic stakeholders.
