The Sudanese army’s delegation returned home from the peace talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for necessary consultations. They plan to continue the negotiations once they have overcome the encountered obstacles.

The absence of a consensus on ending hostilities was attributed to several points of contention, notably concerning the evacuation of civilian residences in the capital, as well as public facilities, hospitals, and roads by the rebels, as stated by the army.

In April, violent conflict erupted as the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) competed for control and influence. In the wake of this conflict, a devastating humanitarian crisis unfolded, forcing over 3 million people to leave their homes, with more than 700,000 seeking refuge in neighboring countries. The scale of displacement and human suffering has been immense since the outbreak of the fighting.

As per the health ministry’s records, the death toll from the ongoing conflict stands at 1,136 individuals. However, there is a strong belief among officials that the actual number of casualties may be higher than what has been officially reported. The uncertainty surrounding the total count underscores the severity and complexity of the situation, amplifying concerns for the well-being and safety of the affected population.

Despite the willingness of the two conflicting parties to engage in mediation efforts led by regional and international actors, none of these endeavors has been successful in achieving a lasting ceasefire.

In light of the various attempts to find a resolution through diplomatic channels, the conflict continues to persist, underscoring the formidable challenges and complexities involved in bringing about a sustainable peace agreement.
