Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng has been appointed to replace the suspended Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela in the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder case trial. President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended Maumela and another judge for their failure to deliver judgments, thus initiating a significant change in the proceedings. The trial was previously postponed to 17th July due to Maumela’s illness but now sees a fresh face at the helm.

Judge Maumela had faced criticism for the delay in delivering justice, prompting the decision to suspend both Maumela and Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi. The suspension comes after the Judicial Service Commission recommended their suspension, and a Judicial Conduct Tribunal was established to address the complaints against them. The allegations revolve around their failure to deliver numerous reserved judgments within the specified time frames.

With the appointment of Judge Mokgoatlheng, the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial could potentially undergo a fresh start. This appointment follows the need for a swift and effective legal process to bring justice to the case. The change in judges is expected to have implications for the trial’s trajectory, and it remains to be seen how it will affect the proceedings moving forward.
