IOM Reports Fourth U.N. Staff Fatality in Sudan Clashes

According to a report by the International Organization for Migration, a tragic incident occurred in Sudan where a humanitarian worker lost his life on Friday, The incident took place when the victim was trying to escort his family to a safer location, and his vehicle was targeted by gunfire, resulting in his unfortunate demise.

In the recent outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary force, the death of the humanitarian worker marks the fourth loss of a United Nations (U.N.) employee. The unfortunate incident occurred in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan, on the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday. Gunfire erupted in the city, and the army was deployed on foot as the situation remains tense amid the ongoing conflict.

“We express our profound sorrow for the loss of our esteemed humanitarian colleague, and extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, newborn child, and our entire team in Sudan,” stated Director-General Antonio Vitorino with a heavy heart.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the humanitarian worker was on the way with his family toward El Obeid, a town located southwest of Khartoum, when the tragic incident occurred. The IOM spokesperson confirmed that the victim was in the process of relocating his family at the time of the attack. In light of this devastating event, the IOM has suspended its operations in Sudan, where it plays a critical role in addressing the needs of approximately 3.7 million displaced individuals.
