Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced controversial cross-dresser Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to a six-month prison term without the option of a fine for abusing the Naira currency.

In delivering the verdict, the judge emphasized that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to others who engage in similar acts of abusing and mutilating the Naira.

Before the sentencing, the judge inquired about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he promptly responded that he identifies as a man.

The judge ruled that the jail term would commence on March 24th, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.

Bobrisky was convicted on April 5 after pleading guilty to charges of abusing the Naira currency brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The sentencing was initially scheduled for last Thursday; however, it was postponed due to a public holiday declared by the Federal government for the Eid al-Fitr celebration.

The charges against Bobrisky stated that on March 24th, 2024, at Imax Circle Mall, Jakande, Lekki, he tampered with N400,000.00 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira) notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying them during a social event. This action constituted an offense under section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.
