An esteemed triathlete and SAC staff member has been apprehended on charges of allegedly raping a seven-year-old boy from another school at a private, off-campus residence. According to the school’s headmaster, Tom Hamilton, they were informed about the incident over the weekend, leading to the immediate arrest of the accused by the Eastern Cape police. The accused, a 49-year-old man, briefly appeared in court and remains in custody, scheduled to apply for bail on Monday, 7 August.

This arrest adds to the distress of the St Andrews community, which is still grappling with a previous sex scandal involving an ex-water polo coach accused of preying on schoolboys at the prestigious campus. Despite the latest incident, Hamilton asserted that there is no current knowledge of any reportable behavior occurring at St Andrew’s College or St Andrew’s Prep during the individual’s employment.

Nevertheless, the school will conduct its own investigation and initiate disciplinary proceedings against the accused. Hamilton suspended the man a day prior to his arrest, stating the necessity of keeping him away from the campus until a thorough investig ation is conducted and court pronouncements are made.

The accused, known for his achievements as an award-winning former community newspaper sports photographer and triathlete, will face the legal process, and his identity remains protected until he pleads in court.
