U.S. State Department Issues “Warning Message” Following Niger Coup

State Department spokesperson Samuel Warburg expressed in an interview with Sky News Arabia, that the seizure of power from Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum “puts the extensive cooperation with the Niger government at stake,” as joint cooperation relies on their continued commitment to democratic standards and the rule of law.

In the latest development in Niger, General Abdulrahman Chiani proclaimed himself the head of the transitional council on Friday after the coup on Wednesday.

Several Western capitals have condemned the coup in Niger and voiced support for President Mohamed Bazoum, with Washington, Berlin, Paris, and the European Union calling for his immediate release.
