The South African National Defence Union (Sandu) has released further information regarding the assault incident on the N1 highway in Fourways, where three civilians were attacked by members of a police VIP unit. Sandu confirmed that the incident took place on Sunday, with one of the victims being a member of their union.
Following the incident, charges of assault, malicious property damage, and the pointing of a firearm were filed against the officers involved at the Sandton Police Station. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is currently investigating the matter.
According to Sandu national secretary Pikkie Greef, the victim’s car was boxed off on the side of the N1 by several SUVs, and the assailants proceeded to smash the back window and assault the driver and passengers. Greef emphasized the need for both Ipid to conduct a thorough investigation and for the victims to be given the space and time to decide whether they wish to pursue charges against the police and consider civil lawsuits against the Minister of Police and the Commissioner of Police.
