Clive Barker, the former coach of Bafana Bafana, sadly passed away on Saturday. The Confederation of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) confirmed the news through a statement released by Barker’s family, revealing that he had been battling with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD).

Barker holds a significant place in South African football history as he led the Bafana Bafana team to victory in the 1996 Cup of Nations, which took place on home soil. This achievement marked South Africa’s first-ever participation in the tournament and brought immense pride to the nation.

In a statement, the Barker family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the medical professionals who provided care for Clive during his six-month battle. They acknowledged his courageous fight and expressed relief that he has now found peace.

At the age of 78, Barker not only guided South Africa to their sole continental triumph but also led the team to their debut World Cup appearance in France in 1998. His contributions to the sport and the country will forever be cherished by fans across South Africa, evident from the overwhelming support he received during his illness.
