In Senegal, President Macky Sall condemns “extremely serious attacks against the State, the Republic, and institutions” after the violence which officially killed sixteen people last week, following the conviction of opponent Ousmane Sonko.

Reaction relayed in the press release from the Council of Ministers this Wednesday evening. While the head of state is called to speak, he should wait for the conclusions of the national dialogue launched on May 31st.

During the Council of Ministers, President Macky Sall denounced human violence, acts of ransacking, and cyberattacks against strategic government sites as “of unparalleled gravity” with the aim of “sowing terror” and “bringing the country to a halt”.

The Head of State asks the government “to open immediate and systematic judicial investigations to shed light on the responsibilities linked to these events”.

While Ousmane Sonko’s Pastef party denounces a “murderous repression of the defense and security forces”, the president salutes their “professionalism” and their “republican posture”.

Macky Sall declared his “openness to consultation” and launched the national dialogue on May 31st. Ousmane Sonko rejected it, but Khalifa Sall and Karim Wade’s PDS decided to take part. Macky Sall wants to conclude the dialogue before June 25th and then address the Nation.
