After undergoing abdominal surgery in Rome, Pope Francis (86) has entered a few days of recovery, raising concerns about his health once again.

According to the Vatican, the Argentine Pope had a peaceful night, but he has been facing recurring health issues since his election in 2013 after the resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, for health reasons. Benedict XVI passed away at the age of 95 in December.

Francis has repeatedly mentioned that he would consider resignation if his health deteriorates.

Despite limping due to hip and knee pain, and relying on a wheelchair or cane, the Pope presided over the weekly meeting at St. Peter’s Church on Wednesday morning in front of thousands of believers before heading to Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

On Wednesday afternoon, he underwent a three-hour surgery under general anesthesia to remove painful “adhesions” in his abdominal wall resulting from a colon operation he had in July 2021.

His surgeon, Sergio Alfieri, stated that the procedure was successful and would have no lasting effects. Alfieri, who performed the surgical operation in 2021, said on Wednesday evening that the Pope had regained consciousness and was joking with his doctors, he confirmed that Francis, who had been suffering from severe and increasing pain, took the decision to undergo the surgery himself and “does not suffer from any other diseases.”

It is expected that the Pope will spend a few days on the tenth floor of the institution known as the “Pope’s Hospital” in the same room where Pope John Paul II stayed on several occasions.
