Nearly 900,000 voters in Guinea Bissau will call the polls on Sunday to renew the People’s Assembly with 102 posts in need of renewal. In the last meetings of the candidates before the end of the campaign, there is a festive atmosphere.

The campaign for the legislative elections ended as it started: in a festive atmosphere in the streets of Bissau. Tam tam and vouvouzélas, the activists came with their families to welcome Brahima Camara, head of the Madem list, the ruling party.

Like all the other candidates, he returns from his campaign conducted inside escorted by processions and popular caravans that crisscross the city. “Now it’s our turn” reads the slogan that appears on the t-shirts of the activists, who all wear a small red and white checkered scarf.

On the merits, the 22 parties in the running discussed their projects in the fields of education, health, and agriculture. Several opposition parties have also strongly contested the current management of the cashew sector which is going through a deep crisis. A situation that penalizes many households, especially in rural areas: farmers derive low income from the current campaign, as does the State, whose revenues largely depend on this sector.

Friday evening, three candidates of the 22 candidates lent themselves to the game of contradictory debate on the national public channel in a final opportunity to convince voters, as the campaign ends.
