UN: More than 100,000 New Sudanese Refugees in Chad Since the Start of the Conflict in Sudan

On June 1st, 2023, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) alarmedly claimed emergency financial support after more than 100,000 Sudanese fled to neighboring Chad to escape the conflict that has been bloodying Sudan for a month and a half.

Laura Lo Castro, the UNHCR representative in Chad, warns that the number of new refugees has exceeded the 100,000 mark since the beginning, on April 15th, 2023, of the conflict between two rival generals vying for power in Khartoum, and estimates that up to 200,000 people more could be forced to flee to Chad within the next three months.
