The Moroccan government and the Sino-European group “GOTION High-Tech” signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday in Marrakech during the first edition of “GITEX Africa”. Aziz Akhannouch, the Head of Government, and several Moroccan and Chinese officials attended the event to witness the agreement for the construction of the 1st Gigafactory in Africa.

The Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Convergence, and Evaluation of Public Policies, Mohcine Jazouli, and the Chairman of GOTION High-Tech, Li Zhen, signed the memorandum of understanding.

The purpose of this partnership is to strengthen cooperation in areas relating to renewable energies and their use, primarily in the production of electric vehicles.

A joint press release following the meeting stated that, through this win-win partnership, the Kingdom intends to join forces with a key player in the renewable energy and electric mobility sector. For its part, the Sino-European group GOTION High-Tech, a leader in the electric mobility sector, plans to set up an industrial battery production system in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, in the municipality of Bouknadel, for electric vehicles and energy storage systems in Morocco, with a capacity that could eventually reach 100GWh/year.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s enlightened leadership enabled Morocco to become the leader of the automotive industry in Africa, which is why GOTION High-Tech selected it for its operations.

While welcoming the role of His Majesty the King in implementing the energy strategy in this area, Mr. Zhen explained in a statement to the press that the signing of this memorandum reflects efforts to support the renewable energy sector in Morocco.

As the partnership focuses on promoting the use of solar and wind energy, Mr. Zhen noted that it also aims to strengthen the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, pointing out that Morocco has significant wind and solar energy potential and resources.

For his part, Mr. Jazouli emphasized the importance of this memorandum concerning the establishment of a “giant” factory for the production of batteries for electric vehicles in Morocco, adding that this was a necessary first step for Morocco to position itself as a major player in the automotive industry.

The signing ceremony was marked by the screening of an institutional film highlighting the positive spin-offs of investment in clean energies, the focus on Moroccan-Chinese cooperation, particularly in the economic field, and the results expected from the creation of this plant.
