In Mauritania, there remained only 36 seats to be filled inside the country in the second round to have the total composition of the national assembly, it is now done. According to the results of the second round of legislative elections announced Sunday at 5 p.m. by the Electoral Commission: the ruling party El Insafe, which had already won 80 seats in the first round out of 176, confirms its overwhelming victory.

El Insafe has secured 107 seats out of the 176 in parliament, giving them an overwhelming majority. This is a result of the party’s success in the second round of the elections.

The opposition, for its part, which had obtained only 24 seats in the first round, won three more, including two new ones for the Islamist party of Tawassoul which in total will have eleven deputies in Parliament. As for the new FRUD coalition, it won one more seat and now has seven.

Nevertheless, there was no new deputy from the SAWAB-RAG coalition, which was led by Biram Dah Abeid, the anti-slavery deputy, who retained his five seats.

This year, women get just under a quarter of the National Assembly (24.2%), which is slightly more than in 2018.

These results will still have to be validated by the high judicial authorities after having examined the possible appeals. The Electoral Commission also underlines a turnout of 64.5% in the second round.
