A cyber attack targeted Senegalese government websites on Friday. These sites were operational again on Saturday morning.

The @MysteriousTeamO account claimed on social networks to have paralysed the websites of the presidency, the government, and the armed forces and health ministries.

The account, which claims to belong to the hacker group Anonymous, considers that Senegalese citizens have the right to freely choose their president.

Government spokesman Abdou Karim Fofana recognised the existence of the attack, which consisted of “overwhelming a network with massive amounts of traffic saturating the bandwidth”.

This security attack comes at a time when opposition leader Ousmane Sonko is making a comeback by road to Dakar, where he intends to stage a “freedom caravan” and a show of force.

The media reported clashes between the security forces and his supporters around his arrival in Kolda, a town in the south of the country.
