Togo: Abdou Assouma, President of the Constitutional Court, is dead

After a long illness, this high magistrate, who was 78, passed away on Friday, May 26th. Since 2007, Abdou Assouma has been President of the Constitutional Court.

In 1987, Abdou Assouma helped General President Gnassingbé Eyadéma to create the national human rights commission, and he became its vice president at its installation. He was appointed Minister in charge of the Armed Forces in December 1991 but then left the government of national unity during the transition in 1992.

In 2007, Faure Gnassingbé appointed him President of the Constitutional Court, and he was renewed twice, in 2014 and 2019. Abdou Assouma announced the presidential results in 2010, 2015, and 2020. Everywhere he went, large government 4X4s paraded in his honor in the Djidjolé district. He was considered very competent by many lawyers, and he was faithful among the faithful of the late Gnassingbé Eyadéma.
